Meet Georgia…

We’re excited to introduce you to Georgia, one of our amazing teachers here at Sardinia Yoga

Before taking a more spiritual path and becoming a yoga teacher Georgia worked for many years in the fashion industry as a stylist. She had been practicing yoga since the age of 17 and so decided to take the plunge and in travelled to India in 2013 and achieved a 200 hour certificate in Ashtanga Vinyasa. Since this she has also achieved qualifications in Yin Yoga studying under Norman Blair and the Yoga People and Georgia is also trained in Mandela Yoga, a form of yoga which incorporates the elements into practice.

Georgia’s teaching style is always evolving and changing, it weaves different disciplines into a creative and mindful flow designed to deepen the mind body connection and become more present. With a focus on breath awareness, alignment and fluidity of movement and her classes are always challenging but adaptable to all levels. Combining an anatomical focus with energetic guidance throughout to an encouraging playlist, keeping things fun with a sense of exploration and humour!

You would’ve had to be living under a BIG rock not to have heard about Game of Thrones, the hit HBO show that pretty much has it all – power struggles, plot twists, the best characters, a hell of a lot of nakedness and incredible locations and sets.

The city of Dubrovnik, in Croatia, plays host to this massive show! This is one of the most beautiful cities in the world and we’re lucky enough that we get to host Croatia Yoga just fifteen minutes down the road! So, not only could you spend a few days unwinding and reconnecting with us, there’s also an abundance of fun waiting for you in Dubrovnik!

Here’s a few fun facts for you:

  1. The city is surrounded by 2km of ancient walls and fortifications
  2. In 1979, UNESCO added the city of Dubrovnik to the list of World Heritage Centres
  3. You can tour the city finding all the spots where Game of Thrones was filmed on the Game of Thrones walking tour!
  4. You can also engage in almost every holiday activity you can think of in Dubrovnik. From jeep safari, horseback riding, canoe safari, kayaking, sailing to the Elafite Islands and a visit to the national park on the Island of Mljet. You’ll never be short of things to do.
  5. And last but by no means least…The city gets about 2630 hours of sunlight a year! Now where’s my passport?!

There’s still time if you’d like to sign up to Georgia’s afternoon workshop on Sunday 29th January from 2 – 4pm. Taking place in South East London this 2 hour workshop offers you the chance to deepen your practice.

Georgia will lead you in a hip opening and strengthening practice; allowing you to ground down and connect with your inner self. Setting clear intentions using the breath and mantra you can explore a deeper practice with focus on the lower chakras. A fluid flow designed to strengthen core and safely work into the hips while you unlock the flow of energy and any blockages held in the body.

On Reflection

Jen Potter is one of our fabulous teachers at Sardinia Yoga. Not only is she a wonderful teacher she is also a great wordsmith and has kindly put together some thoughts on why a trip with Sardinia Yoga might be just the tonic!

‘Last May I taught in Mallorca with Sardinia Yoga.

A retreat is about getting away, ALMOST shutting down so you can recharge.

Even though we were in a hotel with other guests it felt like a retreat. The drive from the airport was amazing, windy roads through little villages and market squares.

Whether you go to a retreat or a yoga holiday you spend a good portion of the time reflecting. Reflecting is a type of meditation and we do it all the time.

When we are home, reflection time can be accompanied with occasional anxiety. Reflection can bring unwanted emotion which can lead to unhealthy habits. Or, we can feel overwhelmed and simply return to busy instead.

When you go on a Yoga Holiday there is time to reflect in a spacious manner and if it’s your preference – have a glass of wine every night. The first night we met in reception (optional) to go to dinner. I bonded with ladies from England and we spent every evening visiting restaurants and daytimes swimming or hopping on buses and renting cars.

It’s amazing how candid people can be when they get away from partners, children or jobs. The weird thing is – you can open up knowing you may never see these people again (everyone vows to stay in touch, but I suppose we rarely do).  

One lady came because she wanted to spend her time alone in reflection. That was fine. She loved the yoga and the chats at the breakfast table but then went off so that she could think about how to change her life back home.

On past Yoga retreats I’ve taught on, some people have come with relationship issues, looking for answers from the Yoga or teacher. Yoga Holidays are lighter because people are coming and going. It’s not the same folks for the entire week.

Others did group therapy over bottles of wine. Classic retreats are generally more intense. There is emphasis on the spiritual path of yoga, to come clean, to detox and eat lentils. But with Yoga Holidays it feels like your treating yourself to a spa break.

I always had enough time to be alone. I’d take a long walk around the marina to the Light House rock point. While looking out at the ocean, I realigned my heart and priorities. I asked stuff like: What hobby would enrich my life? How can I add this freshness to the weekday routine?

How can I bring vacation into my city life. Why can’t I just sit at a gorgeous cafe writing in my journal and see the beauty of my own neighbourhood?

I woke up the next day, the same questions came to mind. I find that I suddenly shift. This only happens when I take a break. My room had a lovely balcony. I could see how the locals lived – how they made their business..

At breakfast, I met new people. New conversations were delicious, like the food. The problem with buffets – we ate so much. Some had five cups of coffee before yoga… even though I warned being upside down might hurt.

A few women brought their partners. The husband wanted to learn about anatomy. We talked about his old injuries from football. He seemed very happy to learn and progress with that learning every day.

It was so easy and fun being in this place. I REALLY recommend these holidays. There are so many teachers to chose from. Try and find out what kind of Yoga you like to do and then enquire about the types of teachers.’

The 2017 Season

Happy New Year from all of us here at Sardinia Yoga!

We hope like us you had some great, restorative time off over the holidays and feel rested and ready to take on 2017!

We had such a great year in 2016 at all three of our beautiful venues, we established our third venue near Dubrovnik in Croatia, and we will be returning there in 2017 with an expanded season to include September as well.

We will be returning for our third year in Majorca and doubling up to 2 decks and 2 yoga classes and returning for our seventh season in Sardinia!

Our 2017 season dates are as follows:

1 April – 20 May in Majorca

20 May – 1 July in Croatia

20 May – 29 July in Sardinia

26 August – 30 September in Sardinia

2 September – 7 October in Croatia

30 September – 7 October in Majorca

Don’t forget that you can tailor trips to all of our venues to suit exactly what it is that you’re looking for in a yoga holiday. There’s no set check in day, you can stay for a few days or even a week, we run extra yoga classes in the afternoon or you can enjoy the local markets or the beautiful beaches.

Summer dreaming…

In the words of Ned Stark in Game of Thrones, ‘winter is coming’ and wonderful hot sunny days feel like an all too distant memory to us here at Sardinia Yoga and it’s making us feel nostalgic for sand between our toes, salty hair and a sun kissed glow.

In an attempt to warm ourselves up we’ve delved into our Instagram account @sardiniayoga and trawled through some of the amazing pictures that our guests tagged us in throughout the summer at Sardinia, Cala d’Or and Croatia and we wanted to share some of the best with you!

Yoga on the go

Is it just us or is everyone busy all the time? Any sort of free time has become a complete luxury and our family and work commitments send us here, there and everywhere, at opposite ends of the country in the blink of an eye. So sometimes days, weeks or months even can fly by without you getting the opportunity to put your yoga practice into practice.

Here at Sardinia Yoga, we feel your pain, so we’ve put together a few helpful tips to allow you to take yoga with you wherever you may be!

First of all set the intention to dedicate more time to you and your yoga practice. Give yourself a few minutes in the morning to just sit and be, eyes closed and focus on your breathing. Even if you’re still in bed, in your pyjamas it will help you relax and set your goals your day.

Don’t worry about always having your yoga mat with you, you can buy travel mats or just use a towel, as long as you can clear enough space to put it down on the floor.

If space is a little tight then just do some of your favourite standing poses like chair pose, eagle or mountain pose.

If you attend yoga classes then speak with your instructor and get them to advise you on a few key postures that can be done with little or no equipment. If you don’t really attend a class anymore then take a look at Youtube and create yourself a 10-20 minute sequence of your favourite postures.

Download a yoga app, with this you can take yoga anywhere that you take your phone! Yogajournal have reviewed some of the best yoga apps that are currently out there. Our personal favourite here at Sardinia Yoga is Simply Yoga, it’s free and featured 20, 40 and 60 minute workouts.

If you’re staying in a hotel with a gym then they might run classes or google if there’s anything in your local area. A few emails can help you find a drop in class taking place near you.

Don’t lose sight of why you’re doing this. Remember how great it feels to do just ten minutes of yoga and that ten minutes is better than nothing!
